CHAPTER 43

Sly Wicker leaned against a building in the alley between 19th and 20th, watching the street for the two gang members he hired. They were the last piece of the plan. So far everything had fallen into place. The construction barricade would go up at 3:15. When the Hopkins kid left school at 4:15, his van would be directed onto 19th Street, and the two thugs would divert it into this alley, where he would pretend to save the kid from a carjacking. The abduction would take less than five minutes. Easy.

Sly lit a cigarette, glanced at his watch. Where are the little rats?

They rounded the corner into the alley. He moved his cigarette in a small arc to catch their eye, and they ambled toward him. The taller of the two made a mock salute. “You Sly Wicker?”

They were in their late teens. Tight, sullen faces. Baggy jeans. Nikes the size of boats. Dark jackets loose enough to hide a weapon. They came highly recommended. “Are you Bo?”

“Yeah, and that’s my buddy Weeds,” Bo said, jerking his thumb at the other boy. “Mr. B said you had a job for us. You wanna tell us what it’s about?”

“I need a little help with a guy who owes me money,” Wicker lied. They didn’t have to know about the kidnapping. All he needed was for them to fake a car-jacking. They would stop the van, try to pull Gerard out, at which point Wicker, like a good Samaritan would rush in to offer his help. The two thugs would take off down the alley, and Wicker would quickly knock him out with a little chloroform, tie him up and stuff him into the trunk of Wicker’s car, and take him away to the holding place.

He explained this to Bo and Weeds, except for the part where he doped Gerard and stuffed him into the trunk. “You understand what you’re to do?”

Bo nodded, a smirk on his young face. “We got it. You wanna play super-hero. Make the kid think you’re saving his ass.”

“What I want is for you to do your job,” Wicker growled. He thrust two hundred-dollar bills at the boy. “You do good, you’ll get the rest from Mr. B.”

“Here he comes, here he comes,” Weeds whispered, bouncing on his heels.

“Let’s go,” Bo said.

They ran out into the street waving their arms at the driver of the green van, motioning to him. Gerard slowed and turned the van into the alley. He hit the brakes hard when Weeds stepped in front of the van. The black teenager fell to the ground, and Gerard jerked the gear shift into park. “Jesus, I hit him!”

At that moment, Bo yanked the driver’s door open. Weeds scrambled to his feet, and they both grabbed Gerard’s arm and tried to pull him out of the car. Resisting with all his might, Gerard flexed his left arm and stuck his elbow into Weeds’ face. Then he launched a punch at Bo’s face that sent him staggering backward.
